Down but not out:casualties in the landscape

Oil paintings by A G Stokes.

Stokes’ investigation concentrates attention on anomalies in the landscape, ‘unnatural’ forms which result from the ravages of fire, flood, storm and disease, or which are the consequences of attempts by man to improve life by harnessing or regulating natural forces – a sort of ‘collateral damage’.
The strongly delineated figures stand upright as stoic survivors or lie supine as fallen warriors. They glare, rage, weep, despair and mock, anthropomorphic testaments of the past and harbingers of the future.
