Notes from an imaginary culture

Clare accompanied two ethnologists on fieldwork in Vietnam, where they discover a new ethnic group, and she records them via notes, collected artefacts and models.

This project began during an arts residency at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology in 2008, and the installation was shown there first in 2010.
The exhibition scenario is that Clare accompanied two ethnologists on fieldwork in Vietnam, where they "discover" a new ethnic group, the Od. This group currently lives on the margins of the cities, where they subsist by recycling discarded materials, but their artefacts and customs indicate an agrarian past. The "study" was recorded via notes, collected artefacts and models and is displayed in museum style. The objects and text form a commentary on the practice and problems of ethnology, and on the meaning of Culture.
The artist has used mainly recycled materials in keeping with her ethnic subject.
